Words of Buddha

“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.”

meditation5 We live in a world of endless contrast.  This contrast causes us to have desires. These desires are for things and situations we wish to experience, and those which we do not want to experience. This is the way the world is.  We know what we want or don’t want based on our emotions. Emotions are like a guidance system.  This is all good.

Emotions, which are thoughts, cause a chemical response in our bodies.  We then get to experience a physical manifestation of these feelings, emotions or thoughts. The problem and challenge is we need to take control of our mind to either enjoy the experience, or let it go when the time is right.

The average person has approximately 70,000 thoughts each day while awake. The problem is that most of these are the same ones that they had yesterday, plus about 85% of these thoughts are negative. What is needed is to control the mind and turn more of these thoughts positive.

One thing to understand is it does take some time to calm and control the mind. You are not going to change 70,000 thoughts in one sitting. Changing the mind does require you spend some time in reflection or some form of meditation. Starting out 10 minutes a day is all you need. You can increase this as you get better at doing it and begin to enjoy the process. The purpose of meditation is to control and calm the mind.

There are many different ways to meditate but I am going to give you a simple and effective form.  Sitting is best, if you are lying down you are more likely to fall asleep.  If you are in a chair make sure it is comfortable with your feet flat on the ground.  Sit cross legged if you can.

Now you need to focus on some object. My suggestion is for beginners to focus on breathing. Notice each breath in and out of the body.  Thoughts will begin to pop in and our of your mind. This is normal. Meditating is about letting these thoughts pass as you come back into focus on breathing.  Everyone including experience meditator’s have these random thoughts. The purpose of meditating is to learn not to focus on them, but let them go.

After your time is up take a deep breath and be thankful for the experience. You should feel pretty good. During the day as random thoughts come into your mind, especially the negative ones try not to pay attention to them. Let them go just like you would while meditating. Always look for a reason to feel better about any thought, emotion or situation.

If you are persistant you will soon find that life is just a little bit less stressful. This is because you are developing control of the SELF. Now you can start to successfully make changes in the outside world to reinforce your new way of thinking.
