Kia Jam – Why So Much Attention..

When the mainstream media refer to how well British talent did at prestigious award ceremonies they often utilize the term: “British Film Industry” but the truth is that what they are making reference to is “industry”, and certainly not “British Film”. At next month’s BAFTA awards, the American film Gravity is competing within the category of “Outstanding British Film” and so herein lies one of the numerous problems in the British psyche and certainly within institutions such as the BBC who have never understood what a national cinema means.

I cannot pretend to understand all the answers to what constitutes the nationality of a film, but instinctively I am aware that Gravity is not really a British film. Once we spout numbers regarding how many films get made throughout the uk, how many awards our talents receive, the amount of jobs are produced through UK film production and exactly how much revenue is generated in to the economy from such productions; none of these figures highlight ‘the elephant within the room’ which is that culturally we all do not tell stories that reflect our way of living. Films like The Full Monty become iconic because films using a uniquely British perspective rarely get made or seen. Actually the sole reason why The Full Monty became accessible to a paying industry is just because a foreigner dedicated to it while hailed British institutions like the BBC and Channel Four turned their backs onto it.

The amount of films can you notice that reflect our experiences of being British and living on these shores? The number of films would you observe that truly reflect our work places, schools, universities, and personalities. I don’t just mean Ray Winstone! We have a rainbow variety of personality and culture in Britain which has a representation in the cinema of alongside nil. Forget elitist productions that serve Hollywood’s appetite for your monarchy or English literature; what about our appetite? If you feel that people tend not to need to see such British films, then Make sure you look into the takings from the Full Monty and remind yourself who profited!

Not since the times of Prime Minister Harold Wilson have we had an elected representative put a value (Eady Levy) on foreigners having access to our paying audience in order to Ridley Scott, David Puttnam, Alan Parker and others all benefited and grew from this support system. Trust me, we must have more than simply an Eady Levy to start out any national cinema. The South Korean’s, the French, and the Australians have all taken key decisions from Government to safe guard their unique cultures. We, on the other hand have just left it to the Americans which by definition is not really very British.

Until we recognize the need for an entire shift of consciousness the term “British Film” will forever be considered a contradiction, because a film can never be deemed one nationality when it is owned and distributed by another where each of the key decisions are foreign. This may not constitute a national language of cinema, it precipitates whatever we have today: British talent and rxkfcr for export.

Hollywood comprises a little area of the Indian Cinema. It refers to the Mumbai-based hindi-language film industry the most favored in India. The name ‘Hollywood’ comes from both words ‘Bombay’ (the former term for Mumbai) and ‘Hollywood’ (the center for that American Film industry).

Though nearly all Hollywood movies is in the language Hindi, utilization of Urdu and English words is extremely common. The first Hollywood movie Raja Harishchandra was introduced in 1913. Raja harishchandra had been a silent movie in white and black. And also the first Indian audible movie was Alam Ara released in 1931.

The expense of Hollywood movies is within million dollars, around ten million dollars. Hollywood movies are liked and watched by people all across the globe. It really is most widely used in south-asian countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Many Pakistanis enjoy Hollywood movies but possess some limitations legally. The Indians in South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco form a huge audience for these Hindi movies.
